COMMENTARY | Don’t think Sarah Palin’s actually supporting Newt Gingrich? Think again. She has not officially endorsed a candidate as yet, but recent remarks show whom she’s backing.
“Look at Newt Gingrich, what’s going on with him, via the establishment’s attacks,” the former Alaska governor said on FOX Business . “They’re trying to crucify this man and rewrite history, and rewrite what it is that he has stood for all these years.”
The ex-governor had just completed a supportive rant on Rep. Ron Paul’s domestic policy being lost in general dismissiveness when she added that she saw as similar actions being taken against candidate Gingrich. She went on to blame her favorite scapegoat, the liberal media hypocrisy, whereas Gingrich was being called out for his attacks on fellow GOP candidate Mitt Romney but the opposite was not occurring.
Palin’s words of sympathetic support for the Gingrich campaign were disingenuous at best, self-serving in the least, and indicative of her growing favoritism for the former Speaker of the House in her public remarks. Several high-ranking Republicans and members of the conservative media have gone on record — as highlighted in a Politico piece on Jan. 26 — as being opposed to a Newt Gingrich nomination in August. But historical revisionism has been unnecessary. Recounting Gingrich’s past actions and stating their opinion, mostly scathing, has been enough.
But Palin has shown support for Gingrich before, like when she went on Fox News and chided New Jersey Chris Christie for making a “rookie mistake” when he supported Romney — whom he has openly endorsed — in comments made on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” She said Christie had played into the media’s hands by calling Gingrich an “embarrassment.”
And it is difficult to think that her politics are too far removed from that of her husband, Todd, who has openly endorsed Gingrich for president. But with that endorsement, Palin can be seen as a vicarious endorser without actually committing. Commitment will come when there is a clear GOP nominee.
Palin wouldn’t want to be seen as associating with a losing presidential candidate… again.
But if one wants unbiased media coverage, Politifact’s file on Gingrich is a good place to start. Besides, Gingrich does a good job of crucifying himself. And as for the Republican establishment crucifying him, it should be remembered that crucifixion was once used to punish wrongdoers and isn’t just a symbol of martyrdom.
